Q&A
What is torticollis?
Torticollis, also known as “wry neck,” is a condition where the neck muscles contract involuntarily, causing the head to twist or tilt to one side.
What are the common causes of torticollis?
Torticollis can be caused by muscle injuries, congenital issues (present at birth), infections, or certain medications. It can also occur without a known cause, known as idiopathic torticollis.
What are the symptoms of torticollis?
Symptoms include neck pain, stiffness, limited range of motion in the neck, headaches, and the head tilting to one side. In severe cases, it can cause muscle swelling and discomfort.
How is torticollis diagnosed?
Diagnosis involves a physical examination, review of medical history, and may include imaging tests such as X-rays, MRI, or CT scans to identify underlying causes.
What treatments are available for torticollis?
Treatments may include physical therapy, medications to relax the muscles, stretching exercises, heat therapy, and in some cases, surgery. Botulinum toxin injections may also be used to relieve symptoms.
Can physical therapy help with torticollis?
Yes, physical therapy can be highly effective in treating torticollis. It helps improve muscle flexibility, reduce pain, and restore normal movement through targeted exercises and techniques.
How long does it take to recover from torticollis?
Recovery time varies depending on the severity and underlying cause. Some people may see improvement in a few weeks, while others might take several months of consistent treatment.
Can torticollis be prevented?
While not all cases can be prevented, early intervention, maintaining good posture, avoiding neck strain, and following a physical therapy regimen can help reduce the risk of developing torticollis.

Without a doubt this is the best Physical Therapy experience I have ever had (and I have had several). I have worked with Ayoub Zianai (AZ) and Hesham Abdel-Salam and they are both consummate professionals. A very thorough evaluation was done to start and a treatment plan reviewed. So much more extensive than other PT facilities which just take the referring Dr's prescription and assign exercises. Each week we discuss what is happening and modifications are made if necessary. Both practitioners are easy to speak with and very caring. I highly recommend TheraCave!Posted on Google![]()

I can’t recommend Theracave enough! I came in with herniated discs in my neck that were causing arm pain and making it difficult to work out at all. Hesham took a truly one-on-one approach, helping me understand where the pain was coming from and working on strengthening the areas of my back that needed support. He told me he’d get me back in the gym, and after about 18 sessions, I’m slowly getting back to running and lifting weights with so much more confidence. I also worked with Ayoub, who is lovely, attentive and patient. Both made me feel heard and supported throughout the process. The medical massages made a huge difference, with some of my pain going away and never returning, and the dry needling helped loosen things up. What stands out most is their gentle, science-backed and detail-oriented approach. It’s clear they understand the body and take the time to address what’s actually causing your symptoms. If you’re working toward a goal and want truly personalized care, I highly recommend them!Posted on Google![]()
